Malcolm Little: The Boy Who Grew to Become Malcolm X is a children’s picture book written by Ilyasah Shabazz, Malcolm X’s daughter. The book invites young readers to learn about the life of Malcolm X, while highlighting life lessons of strength, caring for those around you, individuality, and self-reliance. Furthermore, it examines how before becoming one of America’s most influential political figures that he too was once a child, giving readers a unique perspective on the life of Malcolm X. Shabazz was interviewed by Joy Reid via MSNBC on February 23, 2014 about this book and what it means for her to share these family stories about her father. In the interview, she says, “I thought it was important to understand the values that went into a young boy to become a Malcolm X,” emphasizing the role of childhood values and how they intertwine with social justice.
Shabazz also wrote Growing Up X: A Memoir by the Daughter of Malcolm X in 2002.
